Eligibility
FoIFCC invites applicants to this unique Artist Grant & Residency Program, which provides funding for performances, presentations and/or workspace, as well as yearlong opportunities for collaboration with other artists and access to professional development training. Portland-based artists working at any career stage and in wide-ranging disciplines are invited to apply —including those focused on visual arts, writing, multimedia, music (including bands), dance, theater, spoken word, and other multidisciplinary performances.
Focus
The Interstate Firehouse Cultural Center (IFCC) has played and continues to play an integral role in the cultural landscape of historic Albina for multiple generations. It has served as a cultural home for the Black community in N/NE Portland since its founding in 1982 by Portland's first Black Commissioner and Parks’ Director, Charles Jordan. This program is part of a larger community-driven effort to sustain and revitalize the IFCC. So, as an applicant, you are encouraged to consider how your creative work and project aligns with the vision of the IFCC, as an anchor facility where North/Northeast Portland—and its residents’ rich arts and culture contributions—can be presented, displayed, and discussed, and where its significant artists can be honored.
Award Types
Applicants may apply for one of two opportunities, Project Grants or Residencies. Award amounts for both typically range from $5,000 - $8,000. The grant funds are unrestricted so you can use the award to pursue your artistic practice as you see fit (with no obligation to complete a finished work or project). Residencies range from four - nine weeks and include free shared work and performance space in the building’s Theatre.
New for 2027 Residency Applicants
The spaces available for the residency program at IFCC have changed for 2027. Due to the building's elevator being out of commission, only the first floor of the IFCC building will be used for programming so we can make sure the programming is accessible for all. Because the available space is limited and we want to support as many artists as possible, we are offering five (5) residency periods of four - nine weeks, and up to four artists in each residency period. The artists will share the space - based on an agreed upon weekly schedule - for the duration of the residency period. See guideline link below for more details.
Other Program Highlights
Each participating artist will activate IFCC for a minimum of one public event that aligns with the spirit of IFCC. This could be a workshop, open studio, artist talk, class, performance, exhibition, etc. Collaboration among all the participating artists is encouraged, and there will be at least two gatherings to build community. Additionally, numerous opportunities will be offered, such as optional participation in an annual artists’ showcase in the winter and workshops for professional development.
